Violet / Purple

Violet Purple

For this month's colour I came up with some fabrics and threads I dyed last year with blueberries. I didn't use a mordant at all. I just simmered the blueberries for 15 mins or so and used natural materials ... silk, cotton, scrim and cotton and silk threads. I left the fabrics soaking in a jar for a few days on a warm windowsill and they stayed colour fast after washing

Think "Violet Beauregarde" when she chews the blueberry gum :o)

Purple

This was harder than it should have been!  I love purple but as I scanned through a lot of photos I found very few in that hue.  Other than flowers and clothing, I guess purple appears quite infrequently in daily life. 

Fortunately, I use purple a lot in my quilts.  Here are a couple of very small quilts made from leftover bits, some my own and some from other people.

Orchids in my Pine tree

I painted this from my patio when I lived in Sarasota, Florida. This gorgeous orchid hung in a wicker basket withing the branches of the big pine tree. After a foggy morning, the dew would form droplets that sparkled in the sun.  The painting is now in my family room and one of my favorite memories of Florida.

Violet Purple

Oops! I have been busy with new classes and then doing a talk for a quilt group and just realised it is already October!

So, the Colour for October is Violet or Purple. I have learned that the term is different depending which side of the pond you are from. Here in the UK and in some Commonwealth countries, I think, when you talk about the colour wheel, you find violet across from yellow. But if you find colour wheels on the Internet, the same position is taken up with purple!

And then today at the talk for the quilt group, a lady showed her pink and "purple" quilt but said it was pinks and mauves!

So, whatever you call it. Lets have Violet and Purple for the colour for October!
