July -- your country

Today is the Fourth of July, also known as Independence Day, the most important patriotic holiday in the United States.  It's the anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence in 1776.  The day always makes Americans reflect on how our country came to be, its enduring virtues, and the responsibilities and joys of citizenship.

I know that people in other countries have occasions that prompt similar thoughts.  Even though your big holidays or other patriotic moments may not fall in July, this month your challenge is to post some photos that convey what you think is the essence of your country.

For me, the essence of the United States is our democracy.  Flawed though it may be, the right to vote is a precious thing, one for which many people in this country and around the world have given their lives.
