Opposites: Big/Little

As I mentioned at the beginning of the year, we are also going to have prompts about Opposites. The Opposites will come at the beginning of the month and the prompts about what the month means to you will come in the middle of the month - to give you a chance to have a think and get some photos!

So, for for the first part of February, the Opposites will be Big/Little

or Large/Small or Tall/Short. Any of those will do. You can post 2 pictures to show the opposites, or you can post a photo that has both in. If you come up with more than one set of opposites, you can post those, too!

This month I am going to try to go around and find something fresh instead of looking in my files folder! But you can use old photos if you like. However you want to do it will probably be fine! We all like looking at the other ideas and saying Oh yeah! I should have thought of that! and of course if you have something you have made which suits the theme, please show us. (I know at least one member who does big things with little bits!)

To make the label simple, it will just be big/little. So if you start typing it into the label box when you are writing your post, it will bring up all the prompts we have had so far starting with B. Choose big/little and you will be sorted!

January in the part of England where I live is usually mild and wet except for the last three years when they got progressivly colder. Till 2012 so far this winter has been so mild with much rain there has been no frost in the garden at all yet and I have Camellias out the one at the bottom of the garden in the photo usually blooms in April! The photo of the snow through the garden gate was taken in January 2011.

I was on holiday when the first prompt was listed - surrounded by Mayan ruins and staying in Mérida a town founded in 1542 so there were many ancient and old sites to see.

The photo though that I'm sharing is one I took in the grocery store...

'Time saving' cooking kits

Here are time saving cooking kits to make one of my favorite breakfasts: chilaquiles!

I'm not sold on cooking kits - seems fresher and more real to buy things individually... But when I saw these boxes (after wondering why the ones in English were more expensive), I pictured a college student (missing time with his family and his mom's cooking) deciding to buy a box of this cooking kit to try and recreate good times.

January in this part of the country rarely sees any snow. Instead we get an awful lot of rain with the occasional bright day when a walk by the sea or on the moors is a good idea.

I have a couple of 'constitutional' short walks that I do regularly in this area. Luckily we are on the edge of town and these give satisfy my need for the sights and sounds of the countryside at this time of year.

This morning we had the fiercest hail storm I have seen in the six years we have lived here. I grabbed my camera and pointed it out the window into the yard

then rushed to the other end of the house and took this shot of it on the shed roof. I think there are some nice patterns here.

Unfortunately my shots through the glass roof of the conservatory did not really come out.

We don't get much snow in Georgia but for several years we have had an opportunity to play in the snow at Stone Mountain Park's Snow Mountain which provides artificial snow for winter activities. This is my grandson enjoying a slide ride.

Snowdrops – every time! As it happens, I photographed these yesterday. For me they signal the beginning of the end of winter, which is not my favourite season.
Of course, there may be days like this to come before Spring really arrives – cold clear days when the sun shines and I can enjoy the snow briefly before scurrying back inside.

And last January we had visitors playing in the back garden – my little camera struggled with the distance but it was magical to see them.

An armillary (celestial globe) sphere was origanally used by astronomers to determine the position of stars. The sphere acts as a sun dial. This sphere was originally next to my husband's paternal grandmother's goldfish pond. For many years after Grandmother Vigor passed away the sphere was in my FIL's garden. It was passed on to my husband and myself in 1982. For many years it graced our goldfish pond until we moved this past August to Lexington, KY. As yet we haven't landscaped and constructed a new pond but we plan to this spring. The photos show different views of the sphere with the Roman numerals for telling time nicely patinaed. I like to think of the passage of time and family connections when I look at the sphere and know that it will be passed on to other generations.

So, to start off...
To me Blackbirds are January birds! Why? I hear you say.
Here is a photo from a couple winters ago. It is one of my friendly blackbirds enjoying a top up under the feeder. Actually this is the female blackbird which is a dark brown colour. The male is black with a bright yellow bill.
You can listen to some of their songs here. When they get going along with the Robins, it is magical!

I love blackbird song. They actually start singing very lovely songs towards the end of the old year and beginning of the new. When I visited here in January 1987, I didn't know who was singing, but loved the song. I called them "January Birds". It seemed to me that they did a great job of waking the sun up every morning. As I went back from that visit engaged and have come to make England my home, they are part of that magical time for me. It took me quite a few years to discover it was the blackbirds who were singing so well.

This year it has been warm enough to have the window open a bit at night. Wonderful to hear them singing their hearts out! and also as I am looking back just a bit more to that time 25 years ago, it is a lovely memory.

I was a bit ashamed to discover this was my only blackbird photo. I am going to try to get a photo of the blackbirds in my neighbourhood this January. If I can, I will edit this post and add the new photo.

Passage of Time

My niece will marry this August. She wants to have photos of her grandparents on their wedding day at her wedding and asked me because I am the keeper of most of the photo books. She was blown away when I told her I also had my mother's wedding dress and some bits of lace left from the making of it. Perhaps this will be something old.

When preparing the items for the mail, it gave me pause. It was as though I held something sacred in my hands. My parents married in 1938 which makes both the photo and the lace 72 years old. That's old by today's disposable mentality. I share pictures of both with you here. The lace is in amazing condition having survived the passage of time quite well.

While it might be odd to share this old but personal photo here, the passage of time makes that possible. The original image was a tiny 2 x 3 inches. I scanned it at a high resolution to grab the details. Obviously this concept was not possible back in the day.

The passage of time has served my family well. Quality and technology, you are not such distant cousins!

In some communities there are special ways of measuring time. When it comes to fishing it is the tide that really matters as that determines when the boats can leave and re-enter port. This photo was taken at Newlyn which is one of the largest fishing ports in England. It was originally a small traditional fishing village and in the late nineteenth century was home of the Newlyn School of Painters http://www.penleehouse.org.uk/newlyn-school.html who painted the villagers and their daily life.

Hi There,

I'm Guila in Southern California and this is my first post here. Thanks for having me ! When I saw the prompt word I immediately thought of a haiku that I wrote and the little art quilt that I did to accompany it.

Specifically the aspect of time that I addressed is... Procrastination..

Why are we so cavalier with time - wasting so much of it? Could be some underlying fear of failure or for some - fear of success. Maybe we don't think that we have the specific skill required or talent needed to complete the task and that we will face ridicule. Maybe we're in conflict about the task at hand and aren't even sure it's something that we want to do. Maybe we're overwhelmed by other demands in our lives and can't give adequate attention to this newer demand. Maybe we don't have a clear enough image of exactly what it is we want to accomplish. Maybe the task is boring compared to some other activity that could substitute.

I considered these ideas and wrote the following Haiku:

Relentless tick - tock

This haiku inspired an art quilt. I challenged myself to complete the design and basic construction in a specified period of time - 45 minutes. This would otherwise have been time spent playing a game on the computer. I also limited what I would use to a box full of previously fused scraps.

The completed piece is approximately 12 inches by 12 inches. Disparate elements brought together to form a cohesive whole. It demonstrates how focus, definition and time limits overcame procrastination in one dedicated to that art.

Capturing Time

Hello-
My name is Laura and I write to you today from a very chilly (27F) corner of South Carolina. I am new here, and have a photo and revelation to share with you.
Here is a photo I took of the clock tower in Bern, Switzerland. The apartment Einstein lived in while he wrote his paper on relativity (an important topic in our modern understanding of time) is a stone's throw away.
After taking this trip to Switzerland, I was thinking about time, and how there is seemingly no way to capture it as it passes us by, or as we travel (forwards only) through it. However, in looking at a knitting project I worked on while taking the train through Switzerland, I realized that artists, in the act of creating, capture a bit of time by embodying it in our craft. In my case, in each knit stitch I made while traversing the Swiss countryside, I preserved a second of that journey for perpetuity. In the case of the people who created this clock in the 1500's, their craft long outlived them. This will be a good motivator to me to create in this new year.

My brooch is made from watch gears and adorned with orphaned bits of jewelry. They say time travel is impossible but whenever I look at my brooch I journey back in time and remember my adopted father's special pocket watch. He would magically flick it open so I could see it's "workings" whirl and spin in a dance that measured time.

These are time pieces--very new and very old! The first is my Hang Watch that I wear on my jeans belt loop. First time I've taken a picture from this angle!!

The second picture is of a clock that has been in my husband's family for several generations. I think it works but we haven't tried it. I'm not sure we would like the "bong" at the hour---especially at night.

I have a nickel allergy and without the funds for a Rolex, I just can't wear them. I used to be at the mercy of others or clocks in stores to know what time it was. Enter the iPhone! The first thing you encounter when you enter my studio is "my shrine." It's next to my design wall and I can easily see it from my sewing machine. My husband bought me the wonderful clock and when I hung it, he jokingly said, "So I see you have made a shrine to time." I quickly added that it was a shrine FOR time. Who can't use more time?

Slowing down Time

Marking the passage of time... my husband collects clocks and over the years our daughter has searched far and wide to find the most unusual timepieces as gifts for her father. One grand discovery was the Sundial Wristwatch, a masterpiece with no moving parts.

This was her final offering in the timepiece series - a one of a kind, hand-made clock. It only has to be reset for each new era. The face shows the time as a point in the Cenozoic era and the hand moves imperceptibly... ticking off the millennia. very slow moving clock which allows plenty of time for contemplation.

You said there would be some interesting clocks out there and this is the most unusual clock I have ever seen.

It is in the Hermitage Museum in St Petersburg, built in 1770's in England.One of the things I like about this photograph is the colour scheme, with the blue reflections of the windows. There are many better images and videos if you google "Peacock Clock"

Dimension - Time

Not sure if everyone would consider Time to be a Dimension, but I thought it would make a good prompt for starting the New Year. I am even posting it at 1 min past Midnight GMT so those of you who are on a later time could even catch the images from the telly!

It would be interesting if we could show work or photos of Time without resorting to a clock. On the other hand... there are probably some very interesting clocks out there!!!

Here are a couple fascinating Astrolabes I saw in a Museum. I love the shapes in them. I plan to do something with the ideas at some point!

Wikipedia says their many uses include locating and predicting the positions of the Sun, Moon, planets, and stars, determining local time given local latitude and vice-versa, surveying, triangulation, and to cast horoscopes.

The prompt for the first part of December is the Dimension Space. Another brain stretcher. But it doesn't have to be.

Any photos of the skies would probably do as a part of the atmosphere.

Or you could use work you have done about Space. something connecting with your favourite Sci-Fi story, film or show.

or you could think of Space as an empty place.

Here are photos about one of the mighty Cedars in our neighbourhood, (like I showed for wide). This one was just down the path from my house and I could see the top of it every morning out of the bathroom window.

I don't seem to have any actual photos of it in it's majesty, which grieves me. I have this poorly shot photo done in a snow storm at night with the street light causing all sorts of distortions, but then the next photo was taken a few days later after several of the huge limbs came down because of the weight of that snow.

They had to cut it all back. There is still a big awkward stump there, but a big hole in the hearts of those who live near it or played under it. You can no longer use it for directions to our street and so on. However, plans are being made by one of our community 'activists' to get it all carved into a sort of natural climbing frame cum clubhouse.

I will put some of my other Space photos in another post.

In November 2009 we had an amazing storm here. Like many other people I went down to Penzance Prom to take photos. All went well and I got some good shots until I decided that I should stop because the sun was sinking.

The last wave got me good and proper - I was right inside it. I had to phone my husband and get him to come and collect me as I was wet through and had nothing to dry the camera with. Fortunately the camera survived.

The next day we went to Sennen Cove, the beach nearest to Lands End. Here the waves were coming across the breakwater.

And I can't resist adding this photo which I took without a tripod in high winds also at Sennen. A cropped version appears as the header on my Blog.

I almost forgot the most obvious for us. My husband is addicted to fishing for these little fish through the whitebait season which runs from August 15th to November 30th in New Zealand. He has had a good season and we have many packs in our freezer. He also gives a lot away. However he is home now helping me recover from knee surgery but still managing to go out for a few hours of fishing every few days.

As another person who keeps forgetting to post, here is the Avon Gorge which runs through the centre of Bristol.

And here are the Austrian alps taken from a chairlift above Mayerhofen. The valleys are extremely deep.

I live surrounded by old tin mines but so far I haven't been able to find any photos of shafts, even though I know I have taken them. I'll have another look.

Variegated

and so here is a selection of my Variegated threads! I work with variegated threads alot, so have a large selection. Most from Thread Studio in Australia. I get more when they come to the Knitting and Stitching show. They are Valdani, but dyed to Thread Studio specs. I also have discovered Mettler silk finish cotton.

This was a good chance to get the nest sorted in the box where these live! I also have some in my Madiera thread chest and more metallics in the metallics box. Can't have too many!

As I said last month, we have finished shapes. Or at least the basic shapes without gooing off in search of weird and wonderful ones. But I got to thinking on a tangent, and realised we could finish out the year with dimensions.

So, the prompt for this month is height. Lets see how we get on with that. It should give scope for any sort of theme.

Here are a few sculptures modern and ethnic which seem to fit.

We see wild turkeys in our yard year round. This was taken from my kitchen window.

I had never seen the blossom of a tulip poplar tree. Fell in love!

There is just something about turtles that draws my camera out of its bag! This one was enjoying his place in the sun.

T Party

Several years ago when I was working on quilts for each letter of the alphabet, I made a piece from tiny scraps sewed into two-inch squares. I arranged the little monochromatic squares into a big letter T, named the piece Green T, and loved it.

That quilt had relatively low contrast between the T and the background, so I decided to make another quilt with high contrast -- Black T.

I was having so much fun that I made a third quilt, this time with both T and background in color -- Orange Pekoe T.

Finally I made a fourth quilt -- Earl Grey T, which I think is my favorite.

They have been exhibited separately under their individual names, but when they're all together I call the series T Party. Note I had this name long before the politicians seized upon it, and I'm not giving it up. Too bad you can't copyright a title, else I could sue them.

Late again. but this time it was because I was away. and hopefully now that my 3 garments for Fashion Sans Frontieres have been finished and shown at the Festival of Quilts, I will be able to keep up with what day it is! Even my own blog has been sadly neglected of late.

Mine are Toast and Tea (with my husband's gooseberry curd!)

and Table - this is the longest table in England made from one piece of wood. There was a recent community picnic at one of the local parks, so we went along. Unfortunately it was so hot, we all went into the shade to eat after the official photos were taken!

This is a very nice private schooler we saw drop anchor near our boat in the harbor last month.

The squirrel was just emerging from a bottle deposit section of a trash bin in Acadia National Park.

I am glad Linda posted the seed heads. I am right out straight on a deadline and with a family celebration on Monday, totally forgot the 1st of August was also a new prompt!

Anyway, the new shape for August is the Circle. This can also be an oval if you wish. Or anything circular even if it isn't precisely a circle!

Here are a few treasured circles from the British Museum. Pardon the fuzzy photos through glass.

This is probably the end of shapes - or at least specific geometric types. For the next few months we will be doing dimensions. we still have several letters to go on the second part of the month.
